A Great Dream: CIPSI’s Programs and Prospect PDF Print E-mail

Mulyadhi Kartanegara

Our Dream

• “Our dream” is actually an intellectual agenda which presents clearly what CIPSI really wants to achieve, why and how to make it come true, if everything is running well.
• CIPSI is indeed a great dream, that is dream to build a civilization. It’s called a dream, for it just takes the pioneering steps of its great dream to grasp something very great, even almost unattainable, for a small academic organization, like CIPSI.
• To build a civilization is surely a colossal  endeavor, which should properly be the government responsibility. However, when no body takes care of it and our government has not yet built it sufficiently, then, any institution, including CIPSI, can have a legitimate reason to try its best to build that civilization.
• For these reasons, CIPSI, with all the limits it has, determines to build it, through the following ways: first, to build a new scientific tradition, and then, through it, the renaissance, as the gate to the civilization.
• CIPSI determines to do anything possible to achieve it without waiting for the condition of the state to get better and conducive, and the appreciation of the people to science increases, that we don’t know when it will happen.

Background

• Indonesia is a great country with more than 200 millions population. However, it seems that this great number has not been followed by the quality and substance. There is no great scientific discoveries or findings that can make us proud of, as the substantial contribution to the world civilization.
• In education, for example, we belong to the countries that are far below the level of the developed countries.
• We don’t have an established scientific tradition, stimulating great scientific discoveries and facilitating serious scientific researches.
• A civilization will never be possible without any scientific progress, and this scientific progress in turn will never be realized without hard working and sufficient patronage from our ruler and its rich people. The great success of the classical Islamic civilization laid on the interests, concerns, and great supports of the rulers and the rich for sciences.
• In this country, however, the interests and appreciations of the nation leaders and its society towards sciences are still very low. As a consequence, we hardly find well-developed scientific institutions and even when there are, usually they lack of supports.
• Very often, our scientific researches (or more precisely projects) are misdirected or superficial, in spite of the fact that these projects might have already drained a great amount of government money.

Scientific Studies

• CIPSI was designed as a research institution. As such,  CIPSI also organize scientific discussions and studies, such as scientific and philosophical discussions among the internal circle, including CIPSI’s staffs, for we want them to be not only the regular employees, but also as intellectual researchers.
• Sometime, this internal circle were also attended by those who are interested in our discussion, but coming voluntarily from outside. The last book that was discussed was Science of the Cosmos and Science of the Self by William Chittick. This book will be followed by Sword of gnosis by Jacob Needleman.
• In addition, we also have conducted public discussions and seminars, outside of CIPSI, like those we had in the Bank of Indonesia (BI), ITB, IPB etc., or inside of CIPSI itself, like the serial discussions on the selected works, like mine, and other good and beneficial works as well.
• In recent years, we have discussed my book, The re-actualization of Islamic-scientifis Tradition, in the Bank of Indonesia, Jakarta, and book-reviews on my other works, Mengislamkan Nalar and Nalar Religius in Bandung and Yogyakarta.

CIPSI and its Grandeur Agenda

• The most ambitious agenda of CIPSI is to build Indonesian civilization. How we do that? First, by building up a new scientific tradition; and then, by setting up the Third Renaissance--after Arab dan Europa—as the gate of the new civilization.
• To build a new Islamic scientific tradition, first we have to understand well what kind of scientific model that we want to follow and then how to build it.
• The scientific Model we want to follow is Islamic scientific model, and for that purpose, Professor Mulyadhi Kartanegara has composed a book, entitled “Re-actualization of Islamic Scientific Tradition, and other supporting works, such as the Introduction to the Islamic Epistemology and the Integration of Knowledge.

Building the New Scientific Tradition

• How we do it? Following after the scientific tradition of the great Muslim scholars and their patrons, CIPSI has tried to:
• (1) collect as many as possible Islamic scientific works, in its widest sense of the word, as raw materials and source of information needed for building the dreamt scientific tradition.
• (2) translate as many as possible the carefully selected great works of outstanding Muslim scholars from various disciplines, so that the information about them and their works can be easily accessed by as many people as possible.
• (3) to do researches on their works, by means of sorting the existing materials into certain scientific disciplines, than translate them into Indonesian and if possible into English, so that they will become the source of information or references for composing the text books in this country from the elementary schools to the higher education, such colleges and university.

The Greatest Collection

• The collection of the Islamic scientific works runs in accordance with our ambition to make CIPSI the greatest center of information in this country of the scientific-philosophical works, especially in the fields of philosophy, theology, mysticism, and sciences.
• This collection is based on the database that we have made, which include the list of philosophers’ or scientists’ names, their biographies and their works (please see our database book).
• The collection is done by searching the wanted works in this country or abroad by purchasing, or when it is difficult to obtain the original, by copying them.
• Up to this moment, CIPSI has collected around 544 titles, or around 2067 copies (last year 168 titles/402 copies), that have been labeled and catalogued. Ideally, every month we should collect around 30 titles. Unfortunately, very often experienced a financial problem, so that we cannot run it as we have planned.

Translation

• Translation is the most essential condition for any renaissance. It is an effective means for science to be able to create the original works.
• We have conducted this translation of the works of great Muslim philosophers and scientists, hoping that these works will become references, source of information and inspiration for Indonesian students and scholars.
• So far we have completed the translation of the whole Rasa’il Ikhwan al-Safa’ into 8 volumes (around 4000 pages)
• Now we are in the process of translating of Ibn Sina’s al-Shifa’ (The Healing) the greatest Islamic scientific encyclopedia. So far we have translated around 3,300 pages out of 6330 pages (more than a half of it). The process has been running well so far.
• The next works that we have planed to translate are, first, the Asfar of Mulla Sadra (d. 1641) and the Futuhat of Ibn ‘Arabi (d. 1240).

Scientific Research

• CIPSI is essentially research institution. Therefore, we treat the collected and translated works as raw materials on which various researches are conducted.
• So far we have focused on 5 research areas: biographical studies, gnomological studies (on hikma), Islamic science, perennial philosophy, and modern/contemporary philosophy.
• In the biographical area, we have composed database containing the list of scientist-philosophers’ name, their biographies and works.
• In the gnomological area, we have collected some important works on hikam and translated a work of this kind, entitled Mukhtashar Shiwan al-Hikmah, into Indonesian but with an English title, The Best Chicken Soup of the Philosophers.
• In the Islamic science area, we have sorted the 30 psychological materials, from classical works (in 5 volumes (4,900 pages) which we arranged chronologically from the tenth century to the nineteenth century, including Rasa’il Ikhwan al-Shafa, al-Najat, Budd al-’Arif, Miftah al-Ghayb, al-Mabda wa al-Ma’ad, Tajrid al-I’tiqad, al-Asfar, etc.
• This has been followed by the sorting of other materials in different disciplines, such as botany (8 works), zoology (8 works), physics (6 works), and meteorology (6 works). Or course, these will be immediately followed to other disciplines such as arithmetic, astronomy, geometry, music and metaphysics. With all these we really hope that we will have systematic readings in at least 30 scientific disciplines, which will sure facilitate any researcher in these fields.
• Apart from these, we are now conducting a specific research and writing in Islamic Psychology, followed by studies on ethics, and Islamic cosmology. The writing on various scientific disciplines will be continued so long as we can do it.
• Currently, Prof. Osman’s Tawhid and Science and Prof. Mulyadhi’s book, Integrasi Ilmu have been discussed seriously in Center for Islamic Epistemology, IIIT sponsored scientific institution, in view to having a good understanding of the concept of the Integration of knowledge.
• In the near future, CIPSI will organize a series of discussions on other Prof. Mulyadhi’s books, such as Menyelemai Lubuk Tasawwuf, Jalal al-Din Rumi, and Nalar Religius.
• The discussions on the translated works was already done and will continue to be discussed by the translators themselves, such as conducted by Izzuddin on the Physical part of the Rasa’il and other in the near future by Mr. Salman who translated the zoological part of al-Shifa’ of Ibn Sina, in order for the CIPSI’s staffs to be the first persons who know and understand well what being translating.
• Moreover,  “Text Reading” on several philosophical works, such as Bidayat al-Hikmah, Budd al-’Arif dan Misykat al-Anwar, have also been done will be continued whenever the physical and financial condition allow us to do it. Dengan iBy so doing, both CIPSI’s staffs and the guests present in the meetings will be able to taste directly the primary works of the great and the most admired Muslim scholars.

Documentary Film

• The main mission of CIPSI is to publicize what we know to those who don’t know about the Islamic scientific tradition. For that we have tried any possible ways to achieve it.
• One way of these is through multimedia, in this case documentary films. The reason for this is because, according our survey, Indonesia people have not been a reading society yet. Through this media audio-visual means, we hope that the people’s interests in the information on Islamic scientific tradition will come to fore, hence the appreciation to it will also increase.
• The documentary films that we make, will focus on three main themes: (1) on how should we read the universe as the signs of God. The first two films that we have produced are about water and mountain. This will be followed by other films on river, garden and fruits. These series of movies are based on Prof. Mulyadhi’s work called Tak Kenal, Maka Tak Sayang;
• (2) other theme of this documentary film is on Islamic Scientific institution, such as scientific academies (Bayt al-Hikmah, Dar al-Hikmah, dll), colleges (Nizamiyyah, Mustanshiriyyah, dll.), libraries, Observatories, etc.
• (3) Another important theme is on the biographies of great figures in the Islamic scientific tradition, such as scientists, philosophers, theologians, jurists and sufies.

Database

• CIPSI’s database contains the information  on lives and works of Muslim scholars (philosophers, scientists, theologians, and Sufis). All these will be classified into three kinds of list: (1) philosopher-scientists’ names (2) biographies, and (3) their great works.
• As far as biographical matters are concerned, so far CIPSI has successfully identified as many as 757 names of Muslim scholars and 260 biographies of Muslim scholars: philosophers, scientists, theologians, and jurists.
• As for scientific works, CIPSI has identified as many as 3730 titles, and will be surely added up in the furture.

College of Islamic Philosophy

• In addition to the above activities, CIPSI also have another dream of creating a unique college for Islamic philosophy, that will restore the position of philosophy as the posisi mother of other science, including natural, mathematical and metaphysical sciences, so that philosophy will become the metaphysical basis of other sciences (outside the religious ones).
• To run its education, CIPSI will develop its own system and philosophy of education which accord with the Islamic scientific tradition. In so doing, CIPSI will create its own curriculum, syllabus and subject-matters that make use of Islamic philosophical and scientific heritages, and of Western legacy suitable to the Islamic frame-work.
• CIPSI, which is basically a research institution, will find a laboratory for its experiments in a formal educational institution, so that it is hoped that CIPSI will give more benefits to people and so will contribute greatly to the attainment of our great dream: the making of Islamic civilization.

CIPSI Press

• Another CIPSI’s dream, highly relevant to the above mentioned activities is to have a publishing house, which will publish the results of its scientific activities, such as translation, sorted materials, academic papers, proceedings of discussion or seminars with the ever increased activities, CIPSI will surely have precious materials need to be published so that they can be easily accessed and used by people, especially scholars and researchers.
• The main materials, the translations, will be translated by CIPSI’s team. Since the translated material are the main references, therefore, CIPSI will determine its format, size and its quality. By so doing, it will meet the ideal type of publication, suitable both for private and libraries’ collection of the great Muslim scholars.
• In addition, we will also publish scientific materials that we have sorted based on certain scientific disciplines. We are in dire need of such publication for Islamic scientific materials, in various fields such as psychology, botany, astronomy, zoology, aritmatic, geometry, music etc. We hope that all these materials will create its specifically Islamic coloring, as  the materials for comparative study or even as solution to the crisis of the modern system of education.
